Pins I love #1|Breezy Blue Bedrooms

After eight years in our home, we finally got around to redesigning our bedroom earlier this year. (Post on that coming soon!)

While I wasn’t quite sure about the exact color I wanted to paint the room, there was one thing I knew for sure (note my Oprahism): I wanted a breezy blue bedroom. The shade of blue that would make me feel like I was sleeping in a cloud!

We ultimately settled on Lighthouse Shadows from Valspar, and it has turned out to be the perfect shade. As we were selecting the color, I took some inspiration from these pins.

Easy Cucumber Tomato Salad

With just a handful of ingredients, this is one of the simplest summertime dishes that I make on a regular basis. The flavor, texture and color combine to make an amazing fresh veggie side that goes perfectly with any main course.

2 cups chopped tomatoes (I like to use cherry tomatoes because they’re sweeter, especially during the summer)
2 cups chopped English cucumber
1/4 cup tomato basil feta cheese
1 tbsp dry Italian season
1 cup Italian salad dressing

Combine tomatoes, cucumbers and feta cheese in a medium sized bowl. Mix in Italian seasonings. Pour in salad dressing and mix. Refrigerate for 30 minutes, then enjoy!

Three reasons to start coloring again

I must admit, when I heard about the adult coloring book trend, I was a bit intrigued. My youngest loves to color, and I often find myself doodling right alongside him.

Last weekend, for my husband’s birthday, we headed over to our local book store to pick out some books as part of his gift. Well, I got a little something too!

I’ve been wanting to try out this whole adult coloring thing for quite some time, so I seized my opportunity.

From what I’ve read, there are lots of reasons to try adult coloring. Here are three that I’ve seen over and over again.

Creativity for the non-creative artistically challenged. With the use of technology, it’s pretty easy to be creative these days. We take more selfies than we know what to do with! But if you’re looking for a “handmade” creative outlet, coloring just might be your thing. Since the drawings are already there, all you need to do is fill in the blanks. And you can be as creative as you’d like using a variety of colors to create your masterpiece.

Meditation. Many experts also claim that the coloring process is a form of meditation. And my experience has proven this to be true. There is something mind relaxing about losing yourself in the strokes and shadings of your artwork.

Free artwork. Yes, I said it! Many of the coloring books I’ve seen have really intricate designs that can easily be transformed into beautiful framed pieces of art. In fact, if you have an empty wall in need of some interest, you can hang several pieces together to create a unique, custom, INEXPENSIVE collage.

Curious about the book I got? Well, I love it – largely because I love butterflies! It’s “Vive Le Color! Butterflies“; although I picked it up at a brick and mortar shop, it’s also available online. My review so far is that I LOVE IT. The drawings are intricate enough to be pretty, but not so much that I feel I can’t finish coloring it. I’ve only gotten through a few images, but so far so good!

Ready to tap into your inner artist through coloring again? Here are some options to help get you started!

Mixed Berry Yogurt Parfaits

MixedBerryYogurtParfaitThere’s just something about beautifully colored food that makes you want to eat it. The colors scream flavor – and flavor means gooood!

One of the easiest foods to “make colorful” is a yogurt parfait. Each alternating layer of red, pink, blue, gold, or whatever other color your ingredient brings, means another layer of delectability.

If I let my kids choose between a pre-packaged container of yogurt or a “homemade yogurt parfait” where they can see all the pretty layers, the parfait wins hands down. So recently, when they asked for a snack, I immediately reached for this go-to treat that I knew they’d devour.

By the way, my favorite container I use to serve these “special treats” is an Irish coffee glass. It’s the perfect size for a hot chocolate, smoothie, ice cream, and of course, a parfait. I reached for these when it came time to assemble!

Here’s my mixed berry yogurt parfait recipe:

2 cups vanilla flavored non-fat Greek yogurt
2 cups fresh or frozen mixed berries
2 tbsp honey
2 cups granola (optional)

Layer 1/2 cup of vanilla yogurt into the bottom of 2 glasses. Add 1/2 cup of defrosted or fresh berries and juice. Add 1/2 tbsp honey. Repeat until glasses are filled to the top. Serve parfaits immediately. Makes 2 servings.

Try adding granola or almonds to add some crunch; or layer in a 1/4 cup of cooked oatmeal for a heartier snack.

Your turn: what’s your favorite, go-to colorful treat?

The Little Red Dress

Whether it’s an elegant floor-length ball gown, a versatile day-to-evening piece or a short cocktail number, few articles of clothing make more of a statement than a beautiful red dress.

Pashminas for Fall

Happy October! With autumn upon us, it’s time to pull out those cozy layering pieces and I live in pashminas during the cooler months. Whether using them as a scarf, a shawl, a throw to keep your legs warm or even a cute accessory tied on a handbag, these versatile pieces make a great addition to any wardrobe.

What’s your favorite way to wear a pashmina?
